Are Testosterone Boosters a Scam? Separating Weak Evidence From Outright Fraud
Not every testosterone booster is a scam, but the category is crowded with weak evidence and some outright fraud. NIH says the effects of multi-ingredient products cannot be predicted, and FDA warns of hidden drugs in some products sold for sexual enhancement and bodybuilding. Judge a product by its label, its seller and any lab report.

Two problems01
Is a testosterone booster a scam?
The category has two separate problems: weak evidence, which is common, and fraud, which is less common but real.
Weak evidence means a product contains real ingredients with a traditional story and little human data. Fraud means the label or the pitch is false, or the capsule holds something undeclared. A buyer cannot tell them apart from the front of the bottle, which is why the checks matter.
Weak evidence02
What do trials of the ingredients show?
Not much for blends. NIH says one cannot know or predict the effects and safety of ingredient combinations.
NIH's review of exercise supplements notes that most studies include only conditioned athletes, that more research is usually needed and that tribulus terrestris, long claimed to raise testosterone, showed no effect on strength, lean body mass or sex hormone levels (NIH ODS, Exercise supplements). Individual herbs have their own thin literatures, covered on the herbs and hormones page.
| Problem | What it looks like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weak evidence | Real herbs, hidden amounts, big claims | Ask for amounts and a study of the same dose |
| Hidden drugs | An undeclared drug in the capsule | Ask for a lab report; see a clinician |
| False claims | Disease or guaranteed-result promises | Walk away |
| Fake proof | Fabricated reviews or celebrity names | Check the FTC rules |
Fraud03
How does fraud show up?
FDA names the signs: one product that does it all, testimonials, quick fixes, "all natural" as proof and guaranteed outcomes.
FDA warns that products promoted for sexual enhancement are likely to be contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients and are a form of medication health fraud (FDA, Tainted Sexual Enhancement). It adds that "natural" labels have hidden prescription drugs in them (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs). If a pitch checks several of those boxes, treat it as fraud until shown otherwise.
Tick the lines you see. Each one lights a flag and a one-line reason.
Reasons drawn from (FDA, Tainted Sexual Enhancement) (FDA, Bodybuilding Products) (FDA, Testosterone Information) (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements) (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements) (FDA, Structure/Function Claims) (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)) (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs) (FTC, Health Products Guidance) (FTC, Fake Reviews Rule (2024)) (FTC, Endorsement Guides Q&A). A clean checklist is not proof a product is safe: FDA says a product missing from its warning lists is not thereby safe.
