Wild Yam in SodaPeak: What Diosgenin Does, and What It Does Not

Quick answer

Wild yam is the root of a Dioscorea vine, listed fifth in the SodaPeak blend, so it weighs at most 240 mg per two capsules. Its main compound, diosgenin, is a lab starting material for synthetic hormones. Memorial Sloan Kettering says there is no evidence the human body converts diosgenin into progesterone, and human studies are few and small.

What it is01

What is wild yam in SodaPeak?

Wild yam is the root of a Dioscorea vine. The SodaPeak panel lists it fifth, as "Wild Yam Extract (Dioscorea Opposita) Root".

Memorial Sloan Kettering lists its traditional uses as menopausal symptoms, stomach ailments, muscle spasms, asthma, joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis (MSK, Wild Yam). None of those is a muscle, stamina or testosterone use, so its place in a men's blend is a marketing choice, not a documented fit.

Fifth place caps the line at 1,200 divided by 5, which is 240 mg for two capsules (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The label gives no extract strength and no amount.

The chemistry02

What is diosgenin, and does wild yam turn into hormones?

Diosgenin is wild yam's main compound. In a lab it is a raw material for making synthetic progesterone, but Memorial Sloan Kettering states that "there is no evidence that the human body can convert diosgenin into progesterone" (MSK, Wild Yam).

The source adds that diosgenin mimics estrogen and progesterone in animals. Mimicking in an animal study and being turned into a hormone in a person are different things. A wild yam capsule is not a hormone, and the label makes no hormone claim.

Lab chemistry is not body chemistry

A factory can start with a plant compound and finish with a drug through many steps. A person who swallows the plant compound does not run those steps.

Safety03

Is wild yam safe, and who should avoid it?

Wild yam has estrogenic effects, so Memorial Sloan Kettering says people with hormone-sensitive cancers should talk to a physician before using it.

The same source notes that one species has been linked to kidney injury in animal models and does not discuss interactions. That is an honest gap: the source neither warns about nor clears wild yam with medicines, so the question goes to a pharmacist.

Hormone-sensitive cancers

Talk to your doctor first. Estrogenic effects are the reason.

Kidney problems

One species caused kidney injury in animal models. If you have kidney disease, ask before any herb.

Pregnancy

Hormone-active herbs and pregnancy do not mix without a clinician's advice. SodaPeak is for adults only.

Men and estrogenic herbs

If you have a hormone-sensitive condition, any change in a hormone-active herb should be cleared with your clinician first. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

A pattern04

Which SodaPeak names carry a hormone note in the sources?

Four of the eight names have a hormone-related remark in the sources we read. They point in different directions, which is one more reason a "test boost" label needs a clinician's eye.

Hormone-related remarks in the sources, by label line
LineNameWhat the source says
1Horny goat weedEstrogenic effects seen; avoid with hormone-sensitive cancers (MSK, Epimedium)
3Saw palmettoDescribed as having antiandrogen activity (MSK, Saw Palmetto)
5Wild yamEstrogenic effects; talk to a physician if you have a hormone-sensitive cancer (MSK, Wild Yam)
8BoronMight affect steroid hormone function (NIH ODS, Boron)

None of these remarks says the capsule changes a man's hormone levels, and none says it does not. They say the herbs are active enough to deserve a conversation. The herbs and hormones page goes through them in one place.

How much05

How much wild yam is in SodaPeak?

The label does not say. The order allows at most 240 mg for two capsules, and at least nothing.

Our source gives no verified human dose, and human studies are few and small, so there is no studied amount to compare. Fifth place in the list is not a measure of effect, only of weight order. The proprietary blend page explains the ceilings, and the herbs and hormones page puts wild yam beside the other names that are sold for hormone support.

A fair reading is that wild yam is a traditional herb with a hormone reputation that its own source does not support. If the idea of a hormone-active herb in a daily capsule worries you, that is reasonable, and the better move is to talk to a clinician about what you want to change. A test can show whether a hormone is an issue at all (MedlinePlus, Testosterone Test).

  1. Read the plant name

Dioscorea has many species. The label names Dioscorea opposita.

  2. Ask about strength

A maker can tell you the extract ratio and the diosgenin content if you ask.

  3. Compare with your goal

If your goal is hormone-related, a clinician and a blood test come before a capsule.

FAQ06

SodaPeak questions people ask

What is wild yam used for?

Memorial Sloan Kettering lists menopausal symptoms, stomach ailments, muscle spasms, asthma, joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis as traditional uses. Human studies are few and small, with mixed results.

Does wild yam contain progesterone?

No. It contains diosgenin, which labs use to make synthetic progesterone. Memorial Sloan Kettering says there is no evidence the body can convert diosgenin into progesterone.

Does wild yam raise testosterone?

Our sources do not cover testosterone for wild yam. This site makes no claim about hormone levels for SodaPeak.

Is wild yam safe for men?

The source reports estrogenic effects and says people with hormone-sensitive cancers should talk to a physician first. It does not discuss other safety points for men.

Does wild yam interact with medicines?

Memorial Sloan Kettering does not discuss interactions. That is a gap, not a clearance, so show your pharmacist the label.

What does Dioscorea opposita mean on the label?

It is the botanical name of the species listed. The panel prints no extract strength, so the amount of diosgenin is unknown.
