Nettle Root in SodaPeak: What the Research Says and Who Should Be Careful

Quick answer

Nettle root is the root extract of the stinging nettle plant, listed fourth in the SodaPeak blend, so it weighs at most 300 mg per two capsules. Memorial Sloan Kettering says studies suggest it may ease prostate-related urinary symptoms mainly in combinations with other herbs, so the single-herb effect is unclear. It may add to blood pressure medicines.

What it is01

What is nettle root in SodaPeak?

Nettle root is the underground part of the stinging nettle, Urtica dioica. The SodaPeak panel lists it fourth, as "Nettle Extract (Urtica Dioica L.) Root".

Nettle leaf and root are sold for different purposes. The root is the part linked to prostate-related urinary products, while the leaf is used in teas and allergy products. The label names the root, which matters because some studies cited by Memorial Sloan Kettering used other parts: leaf and seed oil (MSK, Nettle).

Fourth place caps the line at 1,200 divided by 4, which is 300 mg for two capsules (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The label prints no extract strength and no amount.

The research02

Does nettle root work, and for what?

Memorial Sloan Kettering says studies suggest nettle may relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, with more studies needed. For that use it is usually combined with saw palmetto or pygeum, so the single-herb effect is unclear (MSK, Nettle).

That caveat is the key fact for a capsule like SodaPeak. A combination study cannot be used to credit one ingredient, and a blend of eight names is not the combination any study used. NCCIH, in its own page, concludes saw palmetto, the usual partner herb, is probably not helpful for the same symptoms (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).

Nettle claims and what Memorial Sloan Kettering reports
ClaimWhat the source says
Urinary symptoms of BPHMay relieve symptoms; mostly in combinations; more studies needed
OsteoarthritisMay relieve symptoms; more studies needed
Blood sugarMight improve control; a leaf extract was used in the diabetes trial
Testosterone or muscleNot covered

This site makes no prostate claim and no muscle claim for SodaPeak.

Safety03

What are the side effects and interactions of nettle?

Case reports include breast enlargement in a man who drank nettle tea, low blood sugar in a 78-year-old man taking a nettle-containing remedy for BPH, hives and allergic rhinitis (MSK, Nettle).

Animal data suggest nettle may add to blood pressure medicines and water pills, and may raise the side-effect risk of medicines processed by CYP450 enzymes. The clinical relevance is undetermined. That means no one knows how often it matters, not that it never does.

Blood pressure

If you take a blood pressure medicine or a diuretic, ask your pharmacist before adding nettle.

Blood sugar

One case of low blood sugar is reported. If you take diabetes medicine, ask your prescriber. Shaking, sweating or confusion needs attention.

Allergy

Hives or an itchy, runny nose after a capsule is a reason to stop. Swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing means 911.

Medicines04

Does nettle root interact with medicines?

Memorial Sloan Kettering's animal-data warnings point to blood pressure medicines, diuretics and CYP450-processed medicines. The matrix lights nettle for each.

Names on the SodaPeak label that a source flags:

  • Horny goat weed
  • Tongkat ali
  • Saw palmetto
  • Nettle root
  • Wild yam
  • Sarsaparilla
  • Orchic substance
  • Boron amino acid chelate

MSK says saw palmetto may increase bruising and bleeding with warfarin and other blood thinners, may add to antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and may add to the side effects of NSAIDs. It also lists serious bleeding case reports.

Interaction notes from (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Epimedium) (NIDDK LiverTox, Tongkat Ali) (MSK, Nettle) (MSK, Wild Yam) (MSK, Smilax glabra) (RxList, Orchic Extract). Not a complete list. The label prints no amounts for these names, so nobody can say how strong any effect would be. Ask your pharmacist with the bottle in hand, and never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own.

Ask a pharmacist to read the label against your list. A prescription change should come from your prescriber, never from a supplement.

How much05

How much nettle root is in SodaPeak?

The label does not say. The order allows up to 300 mg per two capsules, or 150 mg at one capsule if the two are equal.

The Memorial Sloan Kettering page gives no dose that we can quote, so there is no reference amount to hold against the ceiling. The honest summary is short: the label order sets an upper limit, the source sets no benchmark and the real amount is unknown. The ingredients page compares all eight names, and the proprietary blend page shows how the order works.

  • Ask for a certificate of analysis if you need exact amounts.
  • Keep every prescribed medicine as directed.
