Saw Palmetto in SodaPeak: What NCCIH and Memorial Sloan Kettering Say

Quick answer

Saw palmetto is the berry extract of a small palm, listed third in the SodaPeak blend, so it weighs at most 400 mg per two capsules. NCCIH concludes it is probably not helpful for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Memorial Sloan Kettering warns that it may add to bruising and bleeding with blood thinners.

What it is01

What is saw palmetto in SodaPeak?

Saw palmetto is the berry of a small palm from the southeastern United States. The SodaPeak panel lists it third, as "Saw Palmetto Extract (Serenoa Repens) Fruit".

It is most often sold for prostate and urinary comfort. This site makes no prostate claim for SodaPeak, and the bottle makes none. The herb is on the label, so the page reports what NCCIH, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, and Memorial Sloan Kettering say about it.

Third place caps the line at 1,200 divided by 3, which is 400 mg for two capsules (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The label prints no extract strength and no amount.

The research02

Does saw palmetto work for the prostate?

NCCIH says "we know enough to conclude that saw palmetto is probably not helpful" for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, also called BPH (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).

The reasons are in the numbers. A 2023 review of 27 studies found little or no benefit when saw palmetto was used alone. Two NIH-funded trials, one using up to three times the usual dose, found no improvement. For chronic prostatitis, a 2022 review of 5 studies found no significant benefit, and for hair loss the evidence is too limited.

What each source says about saw palmetto
QuestionNCCIHMemorial Sloan Kettering
Urinary symptoms (BPH)Probably not helpfulEvidence mixed; some trials positive, others show no effect (MSK, Saw Palmetto)
Prostate cancerNot coveredNot an effective treatment
PSA readingsDoes not appear to change themNo change beyond placebo
Hair lossEvidence too limitedNot covered
Testosterone or sexual functionNot mentionedLists decreased libido among common effects

Neither source reports any effect of saw palmetto on testosterone levels or muscle. MSK describes it as having antiandrogen activity. That sits oddly beside a blend called "Test Boost", and it is a point to raise with a clinician if you are considering this capsule.

Safety03

What are the side effects of saw palmetto?

Most effects are mild and infrequent: digestive symptoms, dizziness, headache and, in MSK's list, fatigue, diarrhea, decreased libido and rhinitis. NCCIH says it was well tolerated for up to 3 years in studies.

The serious items are case reports, not rates. MSK lists bleeding, including bleeding in a person on a blood thinner and bleeding during surgery, plus pancreatitis and liver damage (MSK, Saw Palmetto). NCCIH says it may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Blood thinners

Warfarin, antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel and daily NSAIDs: MSK says saw palmetto may add to bruising and bleeding.

Surgery and radiation

Tell the surgical team. People receiving radiation therapy should check with a physician first.

Pregnancy

NCCIH says it may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. SodaPeak is for adults.

Medicines04

Does saw palmetto interact with medicines?

Yes, with several. Pick a medicine type below to see which label names a source flags, and why. Saw palmetto lights up for blood thinners, surgery and radiation.

Names on the SodaPeak label that a source flags:

  • Horny goat weed
  • Tongkat ali
  • Saw palmetto
  • Nettle root
  • Wild yam
  • Sarsaparilla
  • Orchic substance
  • Boron amino acid chelate

MSK says saw palmetto may increase bruising and bleeding with warfarin and other blood thinners, may add to antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and may add to the side effects of NSAIDs. It also lists serious bleeding case reports.

Interaction notes from (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Epimedium) (NIDDK LiverTox, Tongkat Ali) (MSK, Nettle) (MSK, Wild Yam) (MSK, Smilax glabra) (RxList, Orchic Extract). Not a complete list. The label prints no amounts for these names, so nobody can say how strong any effect would be. Ask your pharmacist with the bottle in hand, and never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own.

Your pharmacist can check the whole list against all eight names. Bring the bottle, because the panel is the evidence they need.

How much05

How much saw palmetto is in SodaPeak?

The label does not say. The order allows up to 400 mg per two capsules, and the blend could hold far less.

NCCIH's page describes a standard dose in its trials and up to three times that, without giving a milligram figure we can quote, so there is no studied amount to set beside the label. The proprietary blend page shows the arithmetic for all eight names, and the when to see a doctor page lists urinary and prostate symptoms that need a clinician, not a capsule.

Prostate questions belong with a clinician

Trouble urinating, blood in urine, pain, or a sudden change needs an exam. A supplement does not replace it.

FAQ06

SodaPeak questions people ask

Is saw palmetto good for the prostate?

NCCIH concludes it is probably not helpful for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Memorial Sloan Kettering calls the evidence mixed. See a clinician for prostate symptoms.

Does saw palmetto raise testosterone?

Neither NCCIH nor Memorial Sloan Kettering reports that. MSK describes antiandrogen activity and lists decreased libido among common effects.

Is saw palmetto safe with blood thinners?

Memorial Sloan Kettering says it may increase bruising and bleeding with warfarin and may add to antiplatelet drugs and NSAIDs. Ask your prescriber first.

Can saw palmetto change a PSA test?

NCCIH says it does not appear to change PSA readings, and MSK found no change beyond placebo. Tell your clinician about any supplement before a prostate check.

How long can you take saw palmetto?

NCCIH says it was well tolerated for up to 3 years in studies, with mild and infrequent effects. SodaPeak's amount and strength are not printed.

Is saw palmetto safe in pregnancy?

NCCIH says it may be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. SodaPeak is for adults and not for pregnancy.

Does saw palmetto help hair loss?

NCCIH says the evidence for hair loss is too limited to judge.
