SodaPeak Proprietary Blend: Eight Names, One 1,200 mg Total, No Amounts

Quick answer

A proprietary blend is a supplement line that gives one total weight for several ingredients and hides each amount. SodaPeak's Test Boost Proprietary Blend weighs 1,200 mg per serving of 2 capsules and lists eight names. Because blends are listed from heaviest to lightest, the order caps each name at 1,200 mg divided by its place.

Definition01

What is a proprietary blend?

A proprietary blend is a single line on a Supplement Facts panel that lists several ingredients together under one total weight, without saying how much of each there is. The word "proprietary" means the maker treats the split as its own.

Federal labeling rules allow it. The blend is declared as one line, its ingredients must be listed "in descending order of predominance by weight," and the amount shown is the total weight of all of them (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Individual amounts are not required for blend members, while nutrients that have a Daily Value must be declared one by one.

On the SodaPeak panel the line reads "Test Boost Proprietary Blend 1200mg", with "Daily Value Not Established" beside it. Under it are eight names. No amount is printed for any of them.

The arithmetic02

How much of each name is in the SodaPeak blend?

Nobody outside the maker can say. What the order allows is a ceiling for each name and a floor for the first.

The rule is simple. If the names run from heaviest to lightest, no name can weigh more than the one before it. The name in place n therefore cannot weigh more than 1,200 divided by n, because n names at that weight would already use up the total. And the first name must weigh at least 1,200 divided by 8, which is 150 mg.

  2. ≤ 600mg2Tongkat ali
  3. ≤ 400mg3Saw palmetto
  4. ≤ 300mg4Nettle root
  5. ≤ 240mg5Wild yam
  6. ≤ 200mg6Sarsaparilla
  7. ≤ 171.4mg7Orchic substance
  8. ≤ 150mg8Boron amino acid chelate

Each ridge is a ceiling, not a measured amount: names in a blend are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), so the name in place n can weigh at most 1,200 mg divided by n. The first name must weigh at least 1,200 mg divided by 8, which is 150 mg. The real split is not printed.

The ceilings are 1,200, 600, 400, 300, 240, 200, about 171 and 150 mg for two capsules. A ceiling is a limit, not a likely amount. The real split could be anything inside those limits.

Try it03

What happens to the other seven names if the first one is heavy?

They shrink fast. Each extra milligram in line 1 is taken from the room lines 2 to 8 share.

Drag the slider. At 150 mg, the minimum, every line can sit near 150 mg. At 800 mg, the other seven share 400 mg, and none of them can pass 400.

  4. 4Nettle root0
  5. 5Wild yam0
  6. 6Sarsaparilla0
  7. 7Orchic substance0
  8. 8Boron amino acid chelate0

Each bar is the most that line can weigh once line 1 is set: at most the weight of line 1 (the list runs from heaviest to lightest) and at most the remainder shared by the lines above it. These are ceilings from arithmetic (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), not the real amounts.

This is why a first line that is a famous herb tells you little. It could be most of the capsule, or one eighth of it.

Why it matters04

Why do supplements use proprietary blends?

Makers usually give two reasons: protecting a formula from copying, and keeping the label short. Buyers lose the ability to compare doses with research.

A study of tongkat ali might use 200 mg a day. A blend that lists tongkat ali second could hold anything from a trace to 600 mg per serving. The label cannot say which, so a reader cannot match the capsule to the study. The FTC makes the same point in general terms: dose, formulation and form must match what was studied before research supports a product (FTC, Health Products Guidance).

On this label05

What does Test Boost Proprietary Blend mean on the SodaPeak label?

It is the name of the blend line. It says nothing about what the blend does, and no source linked here shows that it changes testosterone.

"Advanced formula" on the front is the same kind of phrase: a description that names no ingredient, amount, test or standard. Shoppers also search for it as a "premium formula". None of these wordings is a measurement, and none is a finding (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements).

The brief lists six herbs, while the panel prints eight names. The two extra names, orchic substance and a boron amino acid chelate, sit in places 7 and 8, so their ceilings are about 171 mg and 150 mg of the compound. The panel does not say how much boron the chelate holds. See the orchic substance and boron pages.

One or two capsules06

Does one capsule halve the blend?

Only if the two capsules in a serving are equal, and the label does not say they are. The panel's serving is two capsules; the seller's brief allows one or two a day.

2 capsules: the label serving

The Supplement Facts panel names 2 capsules as one serving: a 1,200 mg blend of 8 names. A bottle of 60 lasts 30 days.

1 capsule a day

The seller brief allows 1 or 2 capsules a day. If the two capsules are equal, which the label does not say, 1 capsule holds half: up to 600 mg of blend, and a bottle lasts 60 days.

If they are equal, every ceiling halves at one capsule: line 1 up to 600 mg, line 2 up to 300, and so on. If they are not, the ceilings cannot be split at all. Check your bottle's directions, and ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines.

Hidden ingredients are a separate risk

FDA says some products sold for sexual enhancement and bodybuilding hold drugs not on the label (FDA, Tainted Sexual Enhancement). A label cannot show what it does not list. See hidden drugs in supplements.

FAQ07

SodaPeak questions people ask

What is a proprietary blend in supplements?

It is one label line that lists several ingredients under a single total weight and does not print each amount. The ingredients must be listed from heaviest to lightest.

Is a proprietary blend legal?

Yes. Federal rules allow blends if members are listed in descending order of weight, and the amount shown is the total of all members. Nutrients with a Daily Value must be listed individually.

What is the SodaPeak premium formula?

Premium and advanced formula are marketing phrases. The label's facts are one 1,200 mg blend per two capsules, eight names, and no printed amount for any name.

How can I tell how much of each ingredient there is?

From the label alone you cannot. You can only work out the ceiling for each name from its place in the list. Ask the maker for a certificate of analysis if you need exact amounts.

Does a larger total mean a stronger product?

No. A 1,200 mg total includes every name, fillers excluded, and says nothing about the amount of any one name. A smaller blend with each amount printed can tell you more.

Why is the Daily Value not established?

No Daily Value exists for these names, so the panel cannot show a percent. It does not say how much is safe or how much to take.
