Are Testosterone Boosters Steroids? A Different Category, With One Warning
A dietary supplement booster is a different regulatory category from an anabolic steroid drug. But FDA warns that some bodybuilding products may illegally contain steroids or steroid-like substances, sometimes hidden. So a booster is not a steroid by definition, and it can still be one in practice if the capsule holds an undeclared drug.

The answer01
Are testosterone boosters steroids?
Not by category. A supplement is regulated as a food-type product, a steroid drug as a drug. The labels and the rules differ.
FDA says it does not approve dietary supplements before sale, and that a product meant to treat or prevent disease is regulated as a drug (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). A booster that stays within the supplement rules carries herbs, minerals or vitamins, and no steroid. Nothing on the SodaPeak panel is a steroid, and its eight names are plants, a glandular ingredient and a mineral chelate.
The warning02
What does FDA warn about?
That some bodybuilding products may illegally contain steroids or steroid-like substances, sometimes hidden.
| Area | Reported harms |
|---|---|
| Liver and kidney | Serious liver injury, kidney damage |
| Heart and blood | Heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis |
| Mood and mind | Mood changes, aggression, depression |
| Body | Severe acne, hair loss, testicular shrinkage, sexual dysfunction |
That list is FDA's, from its page on bodybuilding products (FDA, Bodybuilding Products).
Warning signs03
How can I spot a product at risk?
FDA names the marketing signs: hormone-product promotion, androgen claims, web and social sales, miraculous promises and stacking.
The same page advises telling your health care professional about everything you take, and seeking care for nausea, weakness, fever, abdominal pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, jaundice or dark urine (FDA, Bodybuilding Products). NCCIH notes that FDA has found hidden prescription drugs in supplements, most often in products marketed for weight loss, sexual enhancement or bodybuilding (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
- Liver warning signsYellow skin or eyes, dark or brown urine, belly pain, nausea, unusual weakness or fatigue. FDA lists these among symptoms to seek care for after risky bodybuilding products.
- Heart and chestChest pain, shortness of breath, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or fainting. Call 911 for chest pain with trouble breathing.
- Allergic reactionHives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing after a capsule: call 911.
- After any supplementStop it, keep the bottle, tell your clinician exactly what you took, and report the problem to FDA MedWatch.
Signs from (FDA, Bodybuilding Products) (FDA, MedWatch). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.
