Boron Upper Limit: What NIH Sets, What Food Provides and Why Label Amounts Matter

Quick answer

NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements sets the tolerable upper intake level for boron at 20 mg a day for adults 19 and over. Food and supplements together usually give about 1.0 to 1.5 mg a day. SodaPeak lists a boron amino acid chelate with a ceiling of 150 mg for the whole compound per serving, and does not say how much of that is boron.

The limit01

What is the boron upper limit?

20 mg of boron a day for ages 19 and up.

NIH ODS updated this in June 2022. The median dietary intake is about 0.87 to 1.35 mg a day, and the total from food and supplements about 1.0 to 1.5 mg a day (NIH ODS, Boron). An upper limit is the highest daily intake unlikely to cause harm for most people, not a target.

SodaPeak02

What does the SodaPeak label say about boron?

It lists a boron amino acid chelate, last, with a ceiling of 150 mg per serving for the whole compound.

A chelate is boron bound to an amino acid, so the compound weighs more than its boron. The label does not give the boron share, so no figure can be compared with the 20 mg limit. The ceiling comes from blend arithmetic (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), not a dose, and the boron page covers the rest.

  4. 4Nettle root0
  5. 5Wild yam0
  6. 6Sarsaparilla0
  7. 7Orchic substance0
  8. 8Boron amino acid chelate0

Each bar is the most that line can weigh once line 1 is set: at most the weight of line 1 (the list runs from heaviest to lightest) and at most the remainder shared by the lines above it. These are ceilings from arithmetic (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), not the real amounts.

Claims03

Does NIH say boron affects testosterone?

No. The sheet does not address testosterone in men.

It notes only that boron might affect steroid hormone function, and that a low-boron diet might lower estrogen in postmenopausal women. Evidence for osteoarthritis and bone health is preliminary or inconclusive, and boron is not known to have clinically relevant medicine interactions (NIH ODS, Boron). This site makes no hormone claim.
