Saw Palmetto and BPH: What NCCIH and Memorial Sloan Kettering Report
NCCIH says it knows enough to conclude saw palmetto is probably not helpful for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate, citing a 2023 review of 27 studies and two NIH-funded trials. MSK calls the evidence mixed. SodaPeak lists saw palmetto third, with no amount, and this site makes no prostate claim.

NCCIH01
What does NCCIH say?
That saw palmetto is probably not helpful for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
Its 2025 update cites a 2023 review of 27 studies that found little or no benefit alone, and two NIH-funded trials, one at up to three times the usual dose, that found no improvement. For chronic prostatitis, a 2022 review of 5 studies found no significant benefit, and evidence for hair loss is too limited (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
| Point | NCCIH | MSK |
|---|---|---|
| Urinary symptoms | Probably not helpful | Mixed evidence |
| PSA | Does not appear to change | Not more than placebo |
| Common effects | Digestive, dizziness, headache | Stomach upset, diarrhea, fatigue, headache |
| Serious reports | None listed | Bleeding, pancreatitis, liver damage |
MSK02
What does MSK add?
Mixed evidence and cautions with blood thinners.
MSK says some trials are positive and other data show no effect, that it is not an effective treatment for prostate cancer, and that it may increase bruising and bleeding with warfarin and other blood thinners (MSK, Saw Palmetto). It describes antiandrogen activity.
SodaPeak03
Where does it sit on the label?
Third, with a ceiling of 400 mg per serving and no stated amount.
The 400 mg figure is arithmetic (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). This site makes no prostate claim for SodaPeak. The saw palmetto page covers the plant, and the NCCIH page says to talk with a provider before any herbal product if you take medicine.
Names on the SodaPeak label that a source flags:
- Horny goat weed
- Tongkat ali
- Saw palmetto
- Nettle root
- Wild yam
- Sarsaparilla
- Orchic substance
- Boron amino acid chelate
MSK says saw palmetto may increase bruising and bleeding with warfarin and other blood thinners, may add to antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel, and may add to the side effects of NSAIDs. It also lists serious bleeding case reports.
Interaction notes from (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Saw Palmetto) (MSK, Epimedium) (NIDDK LiverTox, Tongkat Ali) (MSK, Nettle) (MSK, Wild Yam) (MSK, Smilax glabra) (RxList, Orchic Extract). Not a complete list. The label prints no amounts for these names, so nobody can say how strong any effect would be. Ask your pharmacist with the bottle in hand, and never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own.
