Proprietary Blend Math: What the Descending-Weight Rule Lets You Work Out
Under the labeling rule, a blend lists its members in descending order of weight with one total. So line n weighs at most the total divided by n. For SodaPeak's 1,200 mg and eight names, the ceilings are 1,200, 600, 400, 300, 240, 200, 171.4 and 150 mg, and the first line weighs at least 150 mg. Exact amounts stay unknown.

What does the rule say?
A proprietary blend is declared as one line, its members are listed in descending order of predominance by weight, and the amount shown is the total.
That is the text of 21 CFR 101.36(c). Individual amounts are not required (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The ordering is the only per-ingredient information the label must give.

How are the ceilings worked out?
If each line weighs no more than the one before it, line n cannot exceed the total divided by n.
Take line 3. Lines 1 and 2 weigh at least as much as line 3, so three times line 3 is at most the total, and line 3 is at most 400 mg. The same step works for every line.

Each ridge is a ceiling, not a measured amount: names in a blend are listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), so the name in place n can weigh at most 1,200 mg divided by n. The first name must weigh at least 1,200 mg divided by 8, which is 150 mg. The real split is not printed.

Is there a minimum too?
For line 1 only: at least 150 mg.
The largest of eight numbers that add to 1,200 is at least 1,200 divided by 8, which is 150. No other line has a useful floor, since each could be tiny. The ceilings are bounds, and the real split could be far from them.

What is the math good for?
For testing a claim, not for finding a dose.
If a study used 500 mg of tongkat ali and a seller implies the capsule matches it, the ceiling of 600 mg means that match is possible but unproven. The FTC says dose and form must match what was studied (FTC, Health Products Guidance). The proprietary blend page works through more cases.
