Wild Yam and Hormones: Why the Diosgenin Claim Does Not Hold in the Body
Wild yam contains diosgenin, which is a raw material in the lab for synthetic progesterone. But Memorial Sloan Kettering states there is no evidence that the human body can convert diosgenin into progesterone. It also notes estrogenic effects, so people with hormone-sensitive cancers should speak to a physician. SodaPeak lists wild yam fifth.

The claim01
What is the wild yam hormone claim?
That a plant compound called diosgenin turns into a hormone in the body.
It rests on a true fact in a lab: diosgenin is used as a raw material to make synthetic progesterone. MSK states that there is no evidence the human body can convert diosgenin into progesterone (MSK, Wild Yam). The step that works in a factory has not been shown to happen in a person.
What MSK says02
What else does MSK say about wild yam?
That traditional uses are many, human studies are few and small, and effects are estrogenic.
| Topic | Note |
|---|---|
| Traditional uses | Menopausal symptoms, stomach ailments, muscle spasms, joint pain |
| Human studies | Few, small, mixed results |
| Animals | Diosgenin mimics estrogen and progesterone |
| Conversion in the body | No evidence |
| Caution | Estrogenic effects; hormone-sensitive cancers: ask a physician |
One species has been linked to kidney injury in animal models.
SodaPeak03
Where does wild yam sit on the label?
Fifth, as wild yam extract, with a ceiling of 240 mg per serving and no stated amount.
The ceiling is arithmetic (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The wild yam page covers the plant, and the herbs and hormones guide sets it beside the other names. Nothing here says SodaPeak affects any hormone.
SUPPORTS HEALTHY MUSCLE*
A structure/function line: the star leads to the FDA statement. No source linked here tests SodaPeak. Muscle responds to training on 2 or more days a week, protein and sleep, and the sources on this site say so. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims) (CDC, Adult Activity)
Test Boost Proprietary Blend 1200mg
A blend name and one total. The panel prints no amount for any of the eight names, so the real split is unknown. The blend name is not a finding: no study tested this blend. (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR))
ADVANCED FORMULA
A product description. It names no ingredient, amount, test or standard. (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements)
*Daily Value Not Established
No Daily Value exists for these names, so the panel cannot show a percent of one. It is not a measure of how much to take. (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements)

Why does the myth stick?
Because it sounds scientific and it is partly true.
A claim is more convincing when it contains a real fact. FDA lists promises of dramatic results among its signs of health fraud (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs). The remedy is the same each time: ask what was shown in people, at what dose.
